No Water After a Cold Snap

No water at all, and a hard freeze is the only thing that changed.

Where a kitchen sits against an outside wall, the last stretch of pipe before the dishwasher runs through the coldest cavity in the house. A hard freeze closes it with a plug of ice, and the machine calls for water that cannot come. Viking Repair Denver checks the line and the valve together before anything is replaced, on (303) 729-0972.

Nothing inside the machine changes overnight. If the wash ran perfectly well before the freeze and there is no water after it, whatever changed is outside the cabinet.

Why one wall decides this

A dishwasher is fed off the sink, the sink usually sits under the window, and the window is in the outside wall. So the last few feet of pipe before the machine are the coldest few feet in the house, with little more than a cabinet back and a stud cavity between them and the weather. Let the wind through that cavity for a night and the narrowest pipe in the run closes first — which is the one feeding the dishwasher. The sink carries on working throughout, and that is why the appliance gets the blame.

What the visit has to rule out

Two things, in order. First, whether the line has opened again and is simply blocked further along: ice moving in a pipe pushes loose scale ahead of it, and that scale lands on the first fine mesh it meets. Second, whether the freeze did damage that has not shown itself yet. A pipe can split under ice and hold perfectly well until the pressure returns, so anything that has been frozen is watched under pressure before the kitchen is handed back. Where the damage turns out to be in the pipework rather than in the machine, that is a plumber’s job, and you will be told so plainly rather than sold a valve.

What to try before anyone drives over

  1. Switch the machine off and leave the cabinet doors under the sink standing open so the warmth of the room can reach the pipework.
  2. Try the cold tap at the kitchen sink. If it runs and the machine still gets nothing, the closed length is the branch feeding the dishwasher.
  3. Once water does come back, stand and watch the floor under the machine through a full cycle before you walk away from it.
  4. Never put a flame, a torch or a heat gun near the pipe. A split found later is cheaper than a fire found now.

That is as far as it goes without tools. If it is still wrong, call Viking Repair Denver on (303) 729-0972 and say whether anything has been wet since the thaw — it is usually enough to know which part is coming on the van.
